Christmas Kitchen Display Shelf Ideas for Festive Decor

Some of you may have noticed a small stand on my counter recently. Since a few readers asked about it, I wanted to share the story behind it.

Before Thanksgiving we were putting up a few holiday touches and I found myself remembering how enjoyable it was to style open shelving in our old kitchen. Shelves make decorating so much fun during the holidays.

In this kitchen we chose not to install wall shelves, so I knew I’d need a freestanding piece to recreate that layered look.

I’d been watching for the right item but hadn’t found anything suitable—until recently.

You might recognize the photo above. I used that nesting table idea years ago on the blog and in my book Simple Gatherings. The small nesting table worked perfectly on a counter as a little display stand for a dessert bar, and later it ended up on a bathroom counter. It was one of those versatile pieces I missed after moving.

That memory inspired a simple solution for this house.

Sadly, I think that particular table was left behind in the move. I’ve missed it, but the memory of how useful it was stuck with me.

Right before Thanksgiving my mom and I were at Target when I spotted a log holder in the Magnolia Hearth & Hand section. I’d seen it online and liked it, but seeing it in person made me think of that nesting table all over again.

The log holder would be lovely by a fireplace or near a door filled with wood, but I started imagining it on the counter as a small display unit. That nesting table vignette popped into my head, and I decided to give the log holder a try as a temporary counter shelf for Christmas.

Is it odd? Maybe. Is it delightful? Absolutely.

I opted for “why not?”—I enjoy repurposing items in unconventional ways, and this felt like a fun, simple solution.

It’s not a permanent fixture in the kitchen, so I’m enjoying it while it’s here. It was easy to set up and adds a cheerful, festive touch to the counter that brightens my day.

It doesn’t take much to make a space feel special at Christmastime. For a few weeks each year a simple display can give your home a storybook quality that feels magical.

And isn’t that exactly how Christmas should feel?
