One of my favorite design details is charming outdoor lighting. I’ve added a porch lantern to almost every home we’ve owned, and while we haven’t updated the outdoor fixtures at this house yet, the ideas below are inspiring me. Thoughtfully chosen exterior lighting can transform a home’s curb appeal and set a welcoming tone.

Although these photos focus on exterior ideas, remember that many outdoor fixtures work beautifully indoors. In my own home several lights sold as outdoor fixtures are used inside, including my dining room lantern. Outdoor-rated lights can add texture and durability to interior spaces and often bring a distinct, classic look.

Ideas for choosing outdoor lighting:

  • Match the fixture style to your home’s architecture: lanterns and carriage lights suit traditional and farmhouse homes, while sleek sconces and minimalist pendants complement modern exteriors.
  • Consider scale and placement: large hanging lanterns fit covered porches, while paired wall sconces frame front doors and smaller entries.
  • Choose finishes that age well: copper and oil-rubbed bronze develop character over time, while powder-coated metals resist corrosion in wet climates.
  • Mix vintage-inspired shapes with modern bulbs or dimmers for a balance of charm and functionality.
  • Think beyond the entry: gate posts, arbors, and pathways benefit from thoughtfully placed fixtures to create a cohesive outdoor lighting plan.

If you’re looking for options, many retailers offer a wide selection of outdoor lanterns and sconces in styles that range from rustic to refined. Choosing fixtures with durable construction and appropriate weather ratings ensures they’ll last and continue to enhance your home’s appearance.
