All my life I’ve been enchanted by charming garden gates. Maybe it’s my fondness for “secret garden” stories, but a gate can transform a yard into a private outdoor room and give a home an inviting, intimate feeling.

I once lived in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and there was a house down the street with a front yard and gate that I adored. The whole house felt magazine-worthy, and I photographed the gate for inspiration. Little details like that stick with you.

Nearby, another house had a narrow wooden side door set right into a tall hedge—a delightful, hidden entrance. I probably took those photos a decade ago because I loved that door so much. Each time I walked by I wanted to peek through the little window to see the backyard, but I respected the owner’s privacy. I’m a house admirer, but I try not to be intrusive.

Her front yard was meticulously landscaped and felt like a carefully tended sanctuary. I always admired it from the sidewalk and imagined the private garden beyond the gate. Looking back, I probably should have asked for a tour, but I wanted to honor her space and resisted peeking—although when the gate was open I admit I lingered nearby hoping for a view.
A well-chosen garden gate sets the tone for a home. It reveals style, hints at personality, and makes the act of entering a yard feel more intentional and special.
Right now we’re planning to install two new gates in our side yard, so gates have been on my mind. I’ve been browsing countless photos and asking myself why I can’t have every single gate I like. For now we’ll settle for two, so I’ve narrowed down options that suit our space and aesthetic. It wasn’t easy, but the side yard design is coming together and I’m excited about the direction. I’ll share our choices soon.
Meanwhile, here are a few charming garden gates I came across during my searches—a little springtime inspiration to brighten the gray days of January.
Enjoy!
