How to Arrange Flowers

Hi everyone — Michaela here with this month’s entertaining post. I’m delighted to be back and share a simple, stylish approach to floral arranging that brings warmth and charm to any table.

I’ve loved fresh flowers for as long as I can remember. My mother always kept blooms in the house, and that cheerful touch followed me through college and into every apartment and home I’ve had. Flowers instantly lift a room, and arranging them yourself is both satisfying and surprisingly easy.

With the holidays approaching, I created a centerpiece that worked beautifully for our Thanksgiving table and would transition easily to Christmas with its red, green, and white palette. Below I’ve outlined the materials and steps I used; the same method works for many seasonal looks. There’s also a video showing the full process if you’d like a visual guide.

Music: Jess Penner, Life is Rosy

Flower Recipe: Peonies, David Austin garden roses, seeded eucalyptus, ranunculus, and berry branches.

Step 1: Tape your vase into sections or quadrants. This simple trick creates small pockets that hold stems in place and makes spacing much easier.

Step 2: Build a base with filler blooms and branches. Line the edges of your vessel and place these elements into different quadrants. Branches that spill over the sides add movement and a natural feel.

Step 3: Add your feature flowers next, distributing them among the quadrants so they’re well spaced. Vary stem lengths—some shorter, some taller—to create depth and visual interest.

Step 4: Fill remaining gaps with accent flowers and foliage. I started with ranunculus and then tucked in berry branches to add texture and contrast.

Tip: Rotate the arrangement as you work so it looks good from all angles. Aim for a design that feels balanced all around rather than having a distinct front and back.

The great thing about floral arranging is that there’s no single “right” way to do it. A few practical techniques—like taping the vase into sections—can make a big difference and help you achieve a professional look at home. Don’t be afraid to experiment with placement, height, and texture.

If you’re wondering where to find peonies or seasonal flowers in winter, check local flower markets. Many major cities have wholesale markets open to the public; they’re often much more affordable and offer a wider selection than florists or grocery stores.

Below are a few photos showing how the centerpiece looks on a holiday table. Simple, natural, and festive—perfect for gatherings.
