Thanksgiving, Party & Holiday Table Idea!
While attending Relevant, I enjoyed the mix of awkwardness, laughter and heartfelt moments—and I couldn’t help but notice the charming table decor. From what I gathered, much of the styling was by Events by Design, a talented team I met there. One standout idea, which I later learned came from Melissa Reagan of Blessings Unlimited, felt simple and brilliant: hanging votive candles from the rims of glass hurricanes.
I’ve always placed candles inside hurricanes, but hanging votives on wire transformed the look. The suspended candles created sparkle and movement on the tables, making the setting feel festive and elegant. I wish I had photographed the full table scenes at the event—the arrangement was truly delightful.
The technique is straightforward: twist a length of wire into a small hanger for the votive and hook it over the hurricane’s edge. I tried it at home with some stiff wire—it was a bit stubborn to shape, but the idea was clear and the result lovely. If you use more flexible wire or florist wire, the process becomes even easier.
This little DIY took me about five minutes. It’s a quick, low-effort way to add charm: fill the bottom of the hurricane with pebbles, cranberries, greenery, or any filler you like, then hang one or several votives around the rim. The suspended candles cast a soft glow and add depth to the centerpiece.
This idea works beautifully for dinner tables, buffet displays, entry tables or sofa tables at parties. Use matching hurricanes for a uniform look or mix sizes for a more eclectic arrangement. The hanging votives create visual interest while keeping the flame safely contained within the glass.
If you’re sourcing hurricanes, look for sturdy glass pieces with enough rim to support the votive hangers. Lightweight tea light holders hung on flexible wire or small metal hooks will stay put without scratching the glass. For extra safety, place a small pebble or decorative filler inside to stabilize the votive hanger.
The result is a simple, elegant centerpiece that’s quick to assemble and easy to adapt for seasons and occasions. Whether it’s Thanksgiving, a holiday party, or an intimate dinner, suspended votives add a touch of warmth and sophistication.
Easy peasy idea, huh?
