Are you thinking about installing new flooring? The flooring you choose sets the tone for your entire home — affecting style, flow, and many decorating decisions. It’s one of those elements that can change how a space feels and how you plan future updates.

Often we must live with existing floors for a while, but when the opportunity arises to start fresh, choosing the right flooring becomes an exciting design decision. Picking hardwood can be especially rewarding because of the variety of species, finishes and installation patterns available.

Kitchen painting and new floors under the paper!

I’m thrilled to have had new hickory hardwood floors installed by Mohawk this year. We removed old stained carpet and damaged flooring during our remodel, and the new wood truly transformed the rooms. The change has influenced how I furnish and decorate the space — and it feels great after years of postponing renovations.

My final kitchen, family room and entry floor reveal posts will be published soon. Right now the rooms are protected with tape and paper while the painter finishes up, and I’ve been strictly instructed to stay out so the work isn’t disturbed. That means no full reveals just yet, but they’re coming.

In the meantime, I wanted to share some hardwood floor inspiration. When planning a remodel, inspiration images help you clarify the look and atmosphere you want. They spark ideas about wood species, stains, plank widths and installation patterns like herringbone or chevron that can create a custom, high-impact result.

I usually begin any renovation by collecting photos from magazines and online sources. Visual examples help me imagine details and possibilities, and they often lead to clever solutions that adapt a favorite look to my own home.

There are so many beautiful options in wood flooring. Beyond species and grain, you can choose among stains, finishes, varying plank widths, and installation patterns. Those choices allow you to create a floor that complements your home’s architecture and your personal style.

Along with aesthetic choices, consider practical factors such as your household’s lifestyle, budget, and whether the new flooring should harmonize with existing trim, cabinetry or adjacent floors. These considerations help narrow the options and lead to a confident selection.

Working with professionals is worthwhile. Expert advice on material selection and installation can save time and prevent costly mistakes, ensuring your final floors perform well and look great.

Although choosing new flooring can feel overwhelming, it can also be an enjoyable, creative process — and the results are often transformative.

Even if you’re only dreaming for now, exploring hardwood options is inspiring.

I’m participating in the Mohawk “Floors Me, as Told by Bloggers” program and received hardwood flooring for this project. As always, the opinions and experiences I share are my own.
