A simple way to make a room feel comfortable and welcoming is to provide places for people to set down a drink, snack or a book. Small tables are versatile, easy to move and essential in smaller rooms. I like having a variety of compact tables around the house so they can be used wherever needed.

Small tables have many uses:

  • nightstands
  • side tables next to chairs
  • a spot to hold folded towels in the bathroom
  • a surface to display a stack of books
  • a plant stand

They’re also indispensable when guests visit—everyone appreciates having a place to set a drink.

If you love decorating or wish you had help arranging your home, I recently completed a new guide in the Room Recipe Method course.

The Room Recipe Method is a fresh, magazine-style decorating course that organizes lessons into easy-to-read guides. Each guide is a practical resource you can use to update a room at your own pace, with clear, usable advice and examples.

Each guide ranges from roughly 60–100 pages and contains step-by-step tips, formulas and guidance you can apply immediately. The format makes it enjoyable and simple to follow along while arranging or refreshing a space.

I’ve collected my own decorating process so you can see how I think through layouts, furniture placement and styling. The course is organized so you can work through each guide and apply the lessons in your own home, starting with what you already own and gradually adding new pieces if needed.

The newest guide, Seating Places + Spaces, focuses on arranging furniture, rugs, lighting and window treatments so rooms feel welcoming and functional. It includes practical formulas and tips to help you create comfortable, well-balanced seating areas.

The Room Recipe Method is built around the idea that decorating should help you create a sanctuary.

Several guides are already available within the Room Recipe course inside HomeBody Gathering Place. The membership also offers weekly content, behind-the-scenes inspiration and practical ideas so you can continue learning and making progress on your home projects.
