Do you ever wonder how to mix and match patterns in your home? It can feel overwhelming to decide what works together. Below I share clear, practical guidance for pattern mixing and show examples using pillows and throws to help you visualize combinations that feel cohesive and stylish.

How to Mix Patterns (tips from my book The Inspired Room):

Mixing patterns successfully starts with a few simple principles. Keep a limited color palette, vary the scale of patterns, and balance patterned pieces with solids. The strategies below will help you create layered, comfortable spaces without chaos.

  • Link patterns with a shared color or tone so they read as part of the same family.
  • Don’t be afraid to use three or more patterns — vary the scale of each for visual interest.
  • Begin with a large-scale pattern and pair it with a small-scale pattern in the same color family; add solid pieces to rest the eye.
  • You can mix multiple stripes—contrast a wide stripe with a narrow one for balance.
  • Neutral walls and floors unite diverse patterns and give the room a cohesive foundation.
  • Add patterned artwork or decorative objects in a neutral room to introduce interest without overwhelming the space.
  • Remember that natural textures like wood grain and stone act as organic patterns; include them in your overall mix.

As a general rule, patterns in a similar style—such as traditional with traditional or modern with modern—tend to pair best. That said, feel free to experiment and trust your instincts when you want a bolder look.

Above all, give yourself permission to experiment. If a combination makes you happy, it’s the right choice.

Below are suggested pillow combinations you can mix and match for different looks.

  • For a calm, coastal feel: pair a large-scale botanical or ikat with a small geometric and a linen solid for texture.
  • For a classic look: combine a plaid, a simple stripe, and a small-scale floral or motif that shares the same color tone.
  • For a modern mix: use a bold, abstract pattern as the focal point, add a narrow striped pillow, and finish with a solid pillow in a contrasting texture.
  • For layered neutrals: select patterns in varying neutrals — cream, taupe, and warm gray — and vary the scale from large to tiny.
  • For high-contrast drama: choose a strong graphic pattern, a bold stripe, and a textured solid in black and white with one accent color to tie them together.
