I have always dreamed of designing and building my own home. The idea of choosing every detail — from the floor plan to the finishes — is endlessly appealing. I imagine shaping spaces that reflect how I live and what I love, with thoughtful touches that make a house feel uniquely mine.
At twenty years old I haven’t had the chance to build a real house yet. I have, however, spent countless hours designing dream homes in The Sims. While that’s great practice for layout and style, it’s not quite the same as walking through a finished, lived-in space. The difference is simple: a computer build can’t be lived in, felt, or enjoyed in real life.
If — and when — I do get to create my own home, I know I’ll prioritize architectural details wherever the budget allows. Elements like board and batten, graceful archways, box-beam ceilings, built-ins, and custom doors add character and warmth. These features elevate everyday rooms into memorable places and give a house a sense of history and craftsmanship.
Details can be practical as well as beautiful. Built-in shelving and bespoke storage solutions keep spaces organized, while thoughtfully placed windows and openings create light-filled rooms and pleasing sightlines. A well-designed archway can separate zones without closing them off, and ceiling beams can add scale and rhythm to a room.
There’s also room for playful or secret elements — for instance, a hidden door or a small passage tucked behind a bookshelf. Those kinds of touches bring joy and surprise to a home and make it feel distinctly personal.
After all, who wouldn’t want a top-secret passageway in their house?
