My husband and I have collected original art since we were newlyweds. There’s something special about original artwork—the history, texture, and the stories each piece carries. We don’t have an extensive collection or high-priced pieces, but over the years we’ve picked up originals at estate sales, secondhand shops, on vacations, or online when something spoke to us.
Years ago we discovered a moody floral painting at a local garage sale. It came in a gorgeous frame and quickly became a favorite. We’ve displayed it in nearly every home we’ve had—until our most recent move, when it got tucked away in a box of art while we painted and planned the new rooms.
When it came time to hang things, I couldn’t decide where this painting belonged, and somehow it ended up missing from the rotation. I often give things away when we move, but original art is one of the few things I rarely part with, so I was puzzled where it had gone.
Thankfully, we rediscovered the piece during our latest move. I haven’t decided on its permanent spot yet, so it’s sitting in the living room for now where I can enjoy it and won’t misplace it again. I love how the cheerful colors sit against the overall moody tone of the painting and the frame. That blend of light and dark emotions is exactly what draws me to it—complex, layered, and deeply personal.
Even if you don’t collect or create original art, what you hang on your walls can influence how you feel at home. Art has the power to lift your mood, trigger warm memories, or express a part of your personality. Hanging pieces that mean something to you can transform a room from simply functional to emotionally resonant.
I find it genuinely therapeutic to display art that matters. Sometimes it’s the beauty alone that brightens a day. Other times a painting brings back memories of a trip, a person, or a moment. Over time, the art in our home becomes part of our life’s story.
Do you have artwork that feels meaningful to you? If you’re drawn to moody floral pieces like we are, I’ve gathered similar options to inspire you.
