Hi friends, Courtney here. It’s been a while since I shared an “Out to See” post on The Inspired Room, and today I have a delightful place to introduce: Langley, Washington.
“Out to See” is a travel series named by my mom, inspired by her childhood memories of “going out to sea” on the canal at her grandparents’ backyard along the Puget Sound.
My husband, son and I recently took a day trip to Langley, located at the south end of Whidbey Island overlooking the Saratoga Passage. We both spent much time on Whidbey growing up, and it’s a special place for us — it’s also where we got engaged a few years ago.
The photos here are from two visits: one in summer and one in fall. Langley was charming each season, and I imagine it becomes truly magical during the holidays. I hope you enjoy coming along — I’ve included a few shop and restaurant recommendations if you decide to visit.
Both visits began with brunch at The Braeburn. It’s a popular spot, so expect a short wait, but it’s absolutely worth it.
The interior is cozy and inviting, with a pleasant outdoor patio. The atmosphere reminded me of one of my favorite Seattle restaurants, The Fat Hen, which recently closed — a real loss.
On my first visit I had the farmhouse skillet; the second time I enjoyed a goat cheese and pesto omelette. Both were delicious. The menu looks great across the board, and they also serve lunch and some evenings.
On our most recent visit we shared a biscuit from The Commons Cafe to tide us over before brunch — it was just the right treat.
Grayhorse Mercantile quickly became one of my favorite shops in Langley. It’s stocked with beautiful home goods and thoughtful gifts.
Alma is another lovely shop. I especially loved their baby and kids’ section — so many sweet things.
One charming alleyway sealed my affection for Langley: cobblestone paths, colorful storefronts, fall foliage, string lights and street lanterns create an irresistible, storybook atmosphere.
Bouquets outside Flying Bear stopped me in my tracks. They’re a full-service flower shop with lovely gifts inside.
I was delighted to see our friend Emily Lex’s books in the SeaGlass Cove shop — a nice local find.
We wandered several other charming spots: Callahan’s Firehouse, a glass-blowing studio with beautiful pieces; The Star Store; The Creative Bookworm bookstore; Wish by the Sea; and more delightful boutiques.
We brought home several slices from Whidbey Pies to share with friends that evening. Each flavor we tried was delicious.
On our way out we stopped at Salty Sea Coffee for drinks. We sampled two specials — a Cinnamon Streusel Oat Milk Latte and a Peach Pie Steamer — and enjoyed both.
It doesn’t get much more peaceful than sitting in Adirondack chairs overlooking a view like this. I could have stayed for hours.
There are other places on our list for next time: Prima Bistro, Village Pizzeria, Sweet Mona’s Chocolate, Savory and more.
