My Daily Habit That Keeps Me Happy Every Day

One thing I do every day to feel happier is to incorporate more senses into my daily activities.

For years I have believed that our senses influence how we feel at home. They aren’t a cure-all, but paying attention to them makes daily life richer. Senses bring pleasure, help keep us safe, strengthen positive memories, and make us more aware of the good around us.

I often enjoy visiting Anthropologie stores because of their carefully crafted ambience. When I walk in I slow down, linger, and take in the joyful details. That feeling of being inspired and content is exactly what many of us want for our homes — a place that simply makes us feel happier.

Bringing more sensory experiences into your home and daily routine can increase the joy you feel in your surroundings.

The more we engage our senses, the more we will enjoy being at home. Here are five simple, healthy ways to boost your senses and lift your mood:

1. Enjoy interesting textures.

Introduce tactile variety with fabrics, tassels, trims, woven baskets, and layered textiles. Different textures invite touch and make a room feel more inviting and cozy.

2. Use pleasing colors and patterns.

Color and pattern influence mood and creativity. Choose hues that calm or energize you and mix patterns thoughtfully to add personality without overwhelming the space.

3. Set the right mood with sound and music.

Music can transform everyday tasks into enjoyable moments. Place a small speaker or smart display in frequently used rooms and curate playlists that match the atmosphere you want — relaxing for evenings, upbeat for cleaning or cooking.

4. Choose natural, non-toxic scents.

Scents have a strong effect on mood and memory. Opt for organic, non-toxic options like essential oil blends, simmer pots, or homemade room sprays to freshen your home without harsh chemicals.

5. Be intentional with the words and messages around you.

Meaningful quotes, framed words, or thoughtfully chosen artwork can remind and motivate you daily. Surrounding yourself with positive language can influence how you feel and act in your space.
