As we’ve been looking at houses in Seattle while preparing for our move, one thing keeps standing out: in a competitive market, homes in our price range often need a bit of TLC. A frequent drawback in older homes is their windows — some need replacing, while others would benefit from adding new patio doors or extra windows to bring in more natural light.
My mother, who has remodeled many beautiful homes, always gave the same practical advice: whether building new or renovating, adding more windows is one of the best investments you can make. I’ve seen that firsthand. Adding French doors to several of our homes transformed both the look and the atmosphere. That idea guides me as I house-hunt now. Instead of being discouraged by a dark room or a limited backyard view, I think: MUST ADD WINDOWS AND DOORS. I’m excited for the day I can use that advice in our next house.
I was recently invited by Marvin Windows to take part in a virtual design challenge, and I happily accepted. The brief was simple and inspiring: envision a room transformed by the addition of a new window or door and create a mood board around that vision. For anyone who loves rooms and design, this is a fun exercise. I immediately thought of a space that comes up again and again in the homes I tour: small, dark kitchens or dining areas that feel disconnected from the outdoors.
So my plan was to reimagine one of those uninviting eating areas as a bright, charming breakfast room by installing elegant arched double French doors with simulated divided lites. French doors add instant character, let light pour in, and frame a view that connects the interior to an outdoor space. The transformation is dramatic — a room that once felt closed off becomes warm, airy, and inviting.

Picture those doors with an arched top and leaded glass panes — the architectural detail alone elevates the space. Imagine opening the doors to a backyard, courtyard, or brick patio with blooming flowers and neatly trimmed boxwoods. Perhaps there’s a striped awning or a pergola overhead and soft string lights outside. Seating at a round wood table, you’d be able to enjoy morning light and a refreshed connection to the landscape beyond.
These doors are like small miracles: they flood a room with natural light, enhance architectural charm, and visually expand your living space without changing the footprint. Even an unfurnished room would look lovely with thoughtfully designed doors, but adding a soft rug, a round table that echoes the arch, comfortable chairs, and a standout pendant light makes the space fully livable and beautiful.
Simple updates like new windows or doors offer high impact. They improve functionality, increase curb appeal, and make everyday moments—like breakfast—feel special. That’s the kind of transformation I’m daydreaming about, and I hope to bring it to life someday.
