DIY Lavender Vanilla & Lime Linen Spray | Signature Home Scents

Do you have a signature scent for your home, or a favorite seasonal fragrance you return to year after year?

Last week I mixed a “Lavender Vanilla + Lime” linen spray to freshen our sheets and towels. It smells so bright and clean—like a late spring afternoon. The simple recipe I used is below.

Although I don’t consider myself especially crafty, I do enjoy puttering around the house—arranging things, refreshing small details, and making the home feel more inviting. For me that includes scent as much as sight. A familiar fragrance can make a room feel cozy, calm, or celebratory.

I’ve been talking about signature home scents since the early days of the blog and in my first book, Love the Home You Have. In my most recent book, Dwelling, I wrote about how natural scents woven into everyday life can lift our mood and enhance well-being. A meaningful scent is a small, inexpensive pleasure that can change the feel of a space.

Creating a custom linen or room spray is an easy, satisfying project—especially compared with more ambitious DIYs that can go sideways (I once super-glued my fingers together; don’t try that at home). A simple spray is quick to make, customizable, and a lovely way to make your home smell like you.

Making a signature linen spray is a tiny home-improvement project that brings a lot of simple joy.

Below is the recipe I use. I keep the proportions small so the scent stays fresh, and I can easily tweak it if I want a more floral, woodsy, or citrus-forward result.

Lavender Vanilla + Lime Linen Spray:

– 10 drops lavender essential oil

– 10 drops Stress Away or a similar blend that includes lime and vanilla

– Use a 1 oz spray bottle

– Optional: a pinch of sea salt

– Fill the remainder of the bottle with filtered or distilled water

Shake well before each use and mist lightly on sheets and towels. I spritz the bedding before making the bed in the morning and again before settling in at night. The scent is calming and helps me relax—perfect for winding down.

I also share this quick how-to in my Instagram story highlights for a visual step-by-step.

Notes and Sources

If you want to source essential oils, choose a reputable brand you trust and follow any safety guidelines provided for topical or linen use. Bottles and atomizers are available in many styles; clear or cobalt blue glass are attractive and practical options for storing small homemade sprays.

Additional Home Finds

If you enjoy small, thoughtful home accents, consider pieces such as decorative creamers, salt keepers, canisters, attractive bowls, and lamp shades. These details help create a curated, lived-in feel without much effort.

Small changes—an intentional scent, a pretty bottle, a new dish towel—can make daily routines feel a little more special. Enjoy experimenting and finding the fragrance combinations that feel like home to you.

Happy mixing and spritzing!
