Our backyard is small, but it’s going to be delightful to transform. We already have a built-in gas firepit and are adding a small deck outside the kitchen through the French doors. I picture a cozy seating area, plenty of potted plants, and climbing roses framing the doors. I plan to fill the space with flowers and greenery to create a charming cottage-garden feel.
Beyond the joy of gardening, our main goal is to design a backyard that feels welcoming for summer evenings with visiting family. To create the right atmosphere, we first imagine the experience we want guests to have. When picturing friends and family gathered together, what elements make the space enjoyable? Thoughtful planning is essential in any yard, but it’s especially important when working with limited space—every inch should earn its place.

Get inspired for summer entertaining with this outdoor mood board!
Mood boards are one of my favorite tools because they show not only how a space could look but also how it could feel—appealing to all the senses. This mood board brings to mind cheerful conversation around a BBQ, soft background music, a pitcher of lemonade on a serving cart, the scent of roses on a trellis, and everyone gathered around the firepit to make s’mores. Those warm summer evenings are what I’m aiming for. I’ll share updates as the backyard comes together.
