What do you like to eat in the autumn? I love soup and could happily eat it every day through spring, especially when it’s varied and uses different ingredients. Sometimes that variety comes from using leftovers or pantry items, and other times it requires planning ahead to make sure the right ingredients are on hand.

Meal planning benefits your schedule in every season

When our children were small, meal planning felt essential. It helped manage hectic days, coordinated with school and sports schedules, and saved money. Even now that our kids are grown and it’s just the two of us, meal planning remains important—my husband even handles much of the planning and cooking these days.

Good meal planning supports both budget and routine at every stage of life. Simplifying routine tasks like meals reduces daily chaos and stress. When we aren’t scrambling to decide what to cook, we feel more organized and free up time to enjoy priorities like family, hobbies, and rest.

Planning meals helps you feel better physically

Every season of life brings different needs, but planning to eat well is always valuable. As we learn more about health and how our bodies respond to different foods, our meal choices evolve. We’ve adjusted recipes and ingredients over time to support our well-being.

For example, our family became more attentive to ingredients when our son had strong reactions to certain foods. Changes were gradual, but listening to our bodies and adapting became a priority. I moved to a gluten-free diet several years ago after a Hashimoto’s diagnosis, and we are mostly dairy-free. One of our daughters follows a vegan diet, so we’ve incorporated more plant-based meals too.

I share more about health and home care in my book Dwelling, where I outline practical ways to nurture both personal health and the household. Planning meals makes it easier to eat well—without planning, it’s too easy to rely on fast food, takeout, or convenient but less nutritious options.

Meal planning is a part of taking care of yourself as well as being intention in the experiences you have in your home
Quote from my book Dwelling

Meal planning supports well-being and meaningful moments at home

Food nourishes the body, but planning meals can also enhance daily life. Choosing seasonal ingredients, trying new recipes, and presenting food thoughtfully can turn ordinary meals into enjoyable experiences. In my book A Lovely Life, I offer simple ideas for creating beauty and intention in everyday routines, including meals.

Even indulgent treats, like pie, feel more satisfying when planned rather than grabbed on impulse. Slowing down to prepare and share a favorite dessert or a special meal encourages connection and makes time together more meaningful. Meal planning encourages us to slow our pace, savor food, and prioritize shared moments around the table.

Focusing on meal planning this fall helps you be intentional about your diet, manage the food budget, and be better prepared each day. Planning reduces stress and creates space for healthier choices and more relaxed family time.
