One of my favorite things about autumn is making the home feel warmer, and curtains are an easy way to do that. If you have beautiful windows and woodwork, you might not need them. For most of us, though, curtains offer practical benefits: they add privacy, hide imperfect trim or views, and—most importantly—make a room feel cozier.
I reused a pair of curtains from my previous house because I wanted to be thrifty. I worried they might close in the dining room, but once autumn arrived I was ready for more warmth. Rather than shrinking the space, the panels added softness and texture. More fabric in a room instantly makes it feel softer and more inviting.
Hanging them was simple. I used a tension rod fitted between the window molding and the wall and hung one panel on each side. I didn’t need functional, draw-able curtains for privacy or insulation, so stationary panels were perfect. When the seasons change, they’re easy to remove.
The stained glass pieces in the windows are actual antique church panels. They’re meaningful to our family since we helped start a church a year ago, so having authentic, personal items in the house matters to me. These pieces also help obscure a less-than-ideal view outside while fitting nicely over the regular windows—held in place with Command Hooks. Those velcro-like hooks are indispensable; I use them all over the house. I enjoy finding simple, creative solutions that are also meaningful.
Autumn is a season for nest-building and comforting details, so I’m enjoying having curtains in two rooms now—small changes that make a difference.
Do you add or change curtains in the fall?
