20 Small Ways to Show Gratitude for Your Home

20 little attitudes of gratitude

Attitude of Gratitude

Back in 2008 I shared a list of our family’s 20 Little Attitudes of Gratitude—simple habits I wanted our son and the rest of our family to practice at home. It felt like the right time to revisit that list, both for our family and to hopefully inspire yours. I reviewed the original items and, honestly, every one still rings true. Rather than change it, I’m sharing it again as a gentle reminder of small ways to cultivate gratitude daily.

20 Little Attitudes of Gratitude

  1. Mind your manners. Say please, thank you and excuse me.
  2. Smile when you see your family. Turn your frown upside down.
  3. Pick up after yourself.
  4. Notice when others do kind things for you and show gratitude with words or actions.
  5. Say “I love you” before going to bed.
  6. Give hugs every day.
  7. Don’t worry about tomorrow; focus on what brings you joy today.
  8. Keep a gratitude journal to record daily blessings.
  9. Appreciate even the small things others do for you.
  10. Leave little love notes in unexpected places like lunch boxes or under pillows.
  11. Encourage someone with a sincere compliment.
  12. When you feel like complaining, try saying what you’re grateful for instead.
  13. Keep a basket of small slips of paper on the table. Write notes of thanks during the week and read them together at a family meal.
  14. Remember to thank God for your blessings each day if faith is part of your life.
  15. Surprise your family or friends with a small gift or treat to show you were thinking of them.
  16. Avoid grumbling about minor annoyances around the house.
  17. Make special plans to cherish time with family, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.
  18. Reflect on happy memories often. Create inspiration boards or albums of special times.
  19. Help someone without being asked. Look for those who might need a hand.
  20. When you do household chores, be grateful you have a home to care for.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.” – Melodie Beatty

Putting a list of attitudes into practice can make home life more joyful—not just around holidays but every day of the year. I invite you to create your own gratitude list, share it with family, and consider posting it where you’ll see it often. If you feel like sharing, leave your list in the comments or make a post about it so others can be inspired.
