AThese past months have been challenging, but I’ve been looking for small silver linings. Staying home has nudged me toward a quieter, more mindful way of living, and I’m grateful for the chance to slow down and notice the little things.

Mornings still hold a touch of chill, but the sun is out more often. Spring’s changing light has become a daily delight from my living room window; each shift in weather invites a fresh appreciation for the world right outside.

A gentle breeze sets the trees swaying and the sea sparkles under sunlight. Salt air drifts through the open window and reminds me how fortunate I am to breathe fresh, clean air. Those small natural moments are grounding and calming.

Recently I’ve watched a striking blue heron land on the shed outside my window while I work. It’s a large, commanding bird—likely searching for a snack in the neighbor’s pond. Observing it makes me nostalgic for the ease of simply going out whenever I wanted—grabbing coffee or meeting friends—but it also reminds me how lucky I am to have the quiet moments I do now.

We’re learning to live within a new normal and to make the best of it. I worry about those who are suffering and I’m grateful for the sacrifices being made to protect vulnerable people. For now, staying home is our contribution—our protection. We are safe, healthy, and together, and I don’t take that for granted because not everyone has those comforts right now.

Here are a few simple practices I’ve used to bring calm and contentment into my home:

  • Be present and notice the beauty in everyday moments.
  • Cut and arrange flowers from the yard to brighten rooms.
  • Turn down the volume of the outside world and embrace quiet.
  • Pray or send positive thoughts instead of allowing worry to take over.
  • Use a diffuser with calming essential oils and take slow, cleansing breaths when I feel tense.
  • Take walks and drives along quiet streets, offering a smile from a safe distance.
  • Keep gratitude lists in a journal or notebook to remember the small gifts of this season.
  • Clean the house with appreciation for this warm, safe shelter.
