When we remodeled our kitchen, I pictured how lovely it would be to watch our pink-and-white magnolia through the window. It’s just as beautiful as I imagined—standing at the counter and looking out at those blooms makes ordinary kitchen tasks feel special. The flowers are fleeting, so I’m savoring every moment they’re here.

The backyard trees are filling in and spring is fully underway. I can already smell the lilacs coming; soon I’ll cut a big bouquet to set on the counter. Watching the garden wake up each day is one of the small pleasures of this season.

Yesterday the sun finally came out and it felt wonderful to soak up a little warmth. We all needed that vitamin D—plants and people alike seemed lifted by the bright weather. I’m hoping for a few more sunny days so everything can keep greening up.

One unexpected benefit of our new kitchen is the oversized sink: it’s perfect for watering plants. I bring smaller pots inside, set them in the sink for a good soak, let them drain, and then use the sprayer to clean up any mess. Polishing the sink until it shines is a satisfying end to the little task—one of those domestic rituals I enjoy.

On the topic of plants and sunshine, I picked up some potted herbs this weekend to keep on the kitchen counter. I’ll be repotting them today and sharing photos another time. Having fresh herbs within reach will be so convenient for cooking, and I’m also planting a few pots outside to extend that kitchen garden feeling to the porch.

Yesterday, as I carried plants into the kitchen, Jack sat by the door and smiled up at me. Between puttering, pups, magnolia blooms, and new plants, my week has been full of simple joys. Those small moments—quiet, ordinary, and lovely—are what I’m grateful for right now.
