Design Your Dream Home: Ultimate Guide to Planning & Inspiration

White Traditional Home - Great Neighborhood HomesGreat Neighborhood Homes

Even though I am very happy and content with my current home, I’m still a dreamer who loves houses. That part of me never goes away.

I don’t know if we’ll ever move, but it’s fun to imagine possibilities. Dreaming about other homes can be inspiring, even if you end up staying and improving the house you already have.

What makes this so tricky is that I can’t settle on one vision of a perfect house. If I tried to describe my ultimate home — the ideal exterior and setting — I’d struggle to narrow it down. If money and location weren’t obstacles, what style would I choose? Would I try to build from scratch?

Often I picture an old shingled cottage by the water — think Nantucket charm. Yet sometimes I imagine a modern farmhouse on a wide piece of land. (We even once nearly bought an alpaca farm.)

For me, the right house is more about the feeling a property gives than a single architectural style. That’s why building a house would be difficult — I’m not always certain which direction to choose.

I love the house in the photo at the top of the post. It would be even more perfect if the back opened with large windows to a beautiful view. I’m not very picky — lots of natural light, a lovely outlook, and a pretty setting close to a charming town are the essentials.
