Shopping for new pieces online or in stores is fun—especially when you’re getting ready for fall or making your home cozier for winter—but rearranging what you already own can be just as satisfying, if not more. Do you agree?
If you’re new to decorating, welcome. Today I’ll share my favorite decorating tip: a simple strategy I’ve used for years. I’ll also explain why I moved my blue lamp into this room and how small adjustments can make a big impact.
If you’re experienced with design, this will be familiar territory. Over the years I’ve applied the same approach through makeovers in many rooms and homes, across all seasons. It’s reliable and enjoyable.

When you’re starting out, it’s easy to think you must constantly buy new things to love your home. You may notice some rooms feel unique and collected while others look like copycats of popular trends. You might wonder whether people are always redecorating to stay current or how some homes come together so effortlessly without new purchases.
Buying everything new is one way to change a space, but it’s not the only path. Many people build a thoughtful collection over time. That approach saves money and creates a personal, layered look that endures. It also makes seasonal refreshes simple and affordable.

My decorating secret is to collect pieces you love over time. When you curate intentionally, you can update a room without buying anything new because you already love what you have. Choosing quality pieces that suit you means your look won’t quickly go out of style. You begin to shop your own home and often discover the perfect item to finish a space or add seasonal charm.
If you do find something special to buy, that’s great too. Adding one or two new pieces to a well-curated collection refreshes the room and expands your styling options. The cumulative effect of thoughtfully chosen items builds a distinctive style that reflects you.
I practice this in our current home, as I have in every house we’ve lived in. Sometimes I’ll buy a rug, an accessory, or occasional furniture when the right piece appears and the budget allows. More often, I enjoy rearranging and mixing what I already own until the room feels right.
If something I already have doesn’t work in a new space, or if I find a piece I can’t resist, I’ll happily add it. The flexibility to move items from room to room is one of the joys of collecting over time.

For example, I moved my blue glass lamp from the upstairs office into this corner. I loved it upstairs, but this space called for a round lamp that would make a statement without blocking window light. For a short time a Tiffany-style lamp sat there and looked lovely, but after living with it I decided it belonged in another corner.
I shopped my home and discovered the blue glass lamp was perfect. It has enough presence to fill the corner while still allowing light and color to pass through. I do miss it upstairs, but this spot needed it more.
I originally bought that lamp on sale a few years ago because it felt like me. Paired with a blue rug I acquired around the same time, the combination now fits naturally in this room. Blue glass accents tend to find a way into my decor because they complement many settings.
Collecting over time expands your options and makes styling easier. When you pair items you already own with a few carefully chosen additions, you create a look that’s uniquely yours.
