Master Bathroom Refresh: Simple Updates to Modernize Your Space

The Inspired Room Simple Bathroom Paint Refresh - Before and After
This post is in partnership with Homewerks.

A couple of weeks ago I decided it was finally time to refresh my master bathroom. We have lived in this house for six and a half years and had never repainted the bathroom walls. They still wore the original builder beige—faded, dingy and scuffed after years of family life. It was definitely time for a change.

This room was the last holdout of the original paint. I had planned to update the bathroom more extensively someday, but with our impending move I wanted a quick, budget-friendly refresh that would brighten the space and give it a slightly more spa-like feel. Rather than replace tile, cabinetry, lighting or the mirror, I focused on painting the walls and adding a few thoughtful accessories to create a calming atmosphere.

Because the tub sits under a skylight—perfect for evening soaks—I added potted plants, candles, fluffy white towels and fragrant soaps to create a relaxing vignette. A small bench provides a comfortable spot beside the tub. These simple touches made the space feel fresher without a major renovation.

On the counter I added a small glass-and-metal table that acts as a shelf for accessories. We hung white robes on hooks and swapped disposable soap bottles for stone dispensers for a more permanent, polished look. A pair of copper-framed mirrors adds warmth and interest; framing the large mirror is something we may tackle later if time allows.

To complete the spa vibe I wanted calming music for soaks and quiet mornings. We installed a modern Bluetooth speaker and fan combo from Homewerks in the ceiling. It replaced an older, noisy fan and now provides ventilation, a built-in night light with white or blue glow, and wireless sound that streams from a phone. It’s easy to use via the wall switch or a small remote, and it instantly elevated the room’s comfort and convenience.

We hired an electrician to install the unit since we were short on time, but the job was straightforward and could be a DIY project for anyone comfortable with basic electrical work. Our electrician liked the unit so much he went to the store to pick one up for himself.

Our dog Jack even approves—there’s a short clip of him relaxed by the tub enjoying the music. He has never been so calm, which makes me think the space feels more like a retreat now.

For paint we used a soft neutral—Dove White by Benjamin Moore—which brightened the room while keeping it warm and inviting. Small changes like stone soap dispensers and ceramic pots added texture and a more intentional look without a big investment.

If you’d like to try a similar refresh, focus on paint, updated textiles, a few quality accessories and a functional, quiet fan. These changes can transform a tired bathroom into a calm, welcoming space without a full renovation.

Thank you to Homewerks for partnering on the fan installation and to Jack for his cameo in the video.
