Y’all, this bathroom has been patiently waiting its turn to get pretty. It’s functional, relatively clean, and not the worst bathroom we’ve ever had.
There are a lot of things I like about it. Compared to previous bathrooms we’ve had, this one ranks high. It’s our first time with double sinks, and that alone has been fantastic. Other houses had bathrooms so small we could barely fit one person; this one could practically hold a party—if you wanted a party in your bathroom. When the kids are getting ready, we’re all in here at once (even though we have two other bathrooms).
I appreciate that the vanity is roomy and tall (oddly, as a shorter person I prefer a taller vanity). The drawers open easily. We have a skylight and four windows that flood the room with light. There’s a deep soaking tub, a separate toilet room with a lake view, and our master closet connects directly to the bathroom. I also love the real slate tile floors instead of vinyl.
Still, there are things I don’t love. Mostly I want it to feel more like a spa hotel and less like a brand-new house. Maybe that’s too much to ask. In truth, it does have a spa-like quality—especially since our fiddle leaf figs like to rejuvenate in the winter sunlight here. Plants love this room.

Of course I wish the cabinets, tile and floor reflected my colors and style more. The windows could use full trim, and the fan is really noisy. Still, this bathroom has served us well for over six years, and I don’t have many complaints. The walls are a bit dinged up and overdue for a fresh coat of paint, so it’s time for a small makeover.
Yes, those walls are the infamous “swine” color. I’ve been looking at that dry builder-grade base coat every morning for six years. The builder probably thought it was a safe beige, but in some light it reads mauve—which is how it earned its nickname. This is the last room still sporting swine. I feel like we’re closing a chapter and will soon say goodbye to that color for good.
Because we don’t plan to stay in this house long enough to justify a full renovation, this will be a true mini makeover. Plan: new paint on the walls, maybe window treatments, and updated towels and accessories. There are many dreamier upgrades that would cost more and take more time, and they would certainly make the bathroom adorable—but they’re not in the cards right now. Even so, a little facelift will make a noticeable difference.
I’m considering blinds, faux shades, or curtains for the windows. The lower half is privacy glass, but I’d love to introduce fabric color or pattern if I can. Aside from that, I suspect painting will be the main change, and I’m excited to see how much better the room looks with a fresh color.
I wish we’d refreshed this bathroom earlier so we could have enjoyed it longer, but that didn’t happen—and that’s okay. One small goal for the future: if we move into another house with builder beige or another color that doesn’t suit us, I want to be able to paint the entire house quickly—maybe even immediately. That would be a good plan.
Now you know where I brush my teeth. If we weren’t already BFFs, maybe we are now after this little tour. I’ll be back soon with more photos and after shots showing the updated room.
