Vintage Blue and White Platters: Identification, Care & Value Guide

A while back I was browsing Facebook Marketplace and came across a vintage blue-and-white platter that stopped me in my tracks. It was too far away to pick up, so I had to let it go—but it kept popping into my mind.

I’d never seen this pattern before, so I did some searching and discovered two more matching platters and a large bowl with different whimsical scenes on each piece—several even featured sailboats. The pieces are vintage Sanyei, a maker I occasionally spot on resale sites.

I adore dishes that depict different charming scenes, so I couldn’t resist. One by one I bought all three. I won the “winter scene” platter in an auction—bidding can sometimes land you a much better price.

Fortunately, the seller accepted my bid right away, so I snagged that piece for a great deal and was thrilled to add it to the collection.

Now the only question is where to display them. They’re quite large, and I live in a smaller home with limited wall space, so I’ve been weighing options.

I picked up heavy-duty plate hangers because these pieces are heavy. For plates this size, sturdy hangers are the safest choice if I decide to mount them. I’m still deciding whether to hang them or use stands on shelves instead.

Normally I prefer to know exactly where something will live before I buy it, but I made an exception because I loved these pieces so much. If I don’t hang them, I can display them on kitchen shelves with the right stands, so I’m confident I’ll find a place for them.

I’ll share photos once I decide on a final spot—stay tuned!
