One morning this week, while sipping my coffee in the living room, I noticed the light had shifted. After living in a home for years you start to recognize seasonal changes in light, but that day the sun came through the blinds in a way I hadn’t seen before, scattering new patterns across the wall.

It’s remarkable how a house can continue to reveal small beauties you missed before, if you pause long enough to notice them.

We moved to this island home four years ago. Since then the seasons have come and gone—four falls, sixteen seasons—and both the house and our life here have evolved in subtle and meaningful ways.
This living room has changed with us. We’ve repainted walls, installed new floors, renovated the adjacent kitchen, swapped out furniture and rearranged the space more times than I can count.
There were chaotic renovation seasons and quieter moments when the room felt settled and cozy again. Each fall it has taken on a slightly different look and feeling, always becoming more like home.

Life here has shifted too. We downsized, became empty nesters, and gradually found new rhythms in this small house.
In four years we’ve celebrated holidays, hosted family visits, welcomed a son-in-law and now two grandchildren. We’ve also grieved the loss of our beloved Jack the Goldendoodle last year—the gap he left is still felt in this home.
We’re grateful for the three joyful years Jack spent with us, and for the new life that followed. Bringing home our puppy Finnegan last year, along with the arrival of our two precious grandbabies, has filled the house with renewed energy and laughter.

Through all these changes, this little living room has welcomed us in every season. It has been a place for quiet mornings, holiday gatherings, work projects and the everyday moments in between.
Living near the sea creates a different rhythm—slower, more peaceful, and grounded in the natural beauty around us.
It takes time to feel settled and to make a house into a true sanctuary. That process isn’t only about the perfect furniture layout or paint color; it’s about embracing the rhythm of each season and shaping the space to reflect your life.
