Make Your House Feel Like Home with a Stylish Indoor-Outdoor Rug

It’s definitely feeling like spring around our house, and more than that, it truly feels like home. We’ve been in this house for almost six years now — longer than I’ve lived anywhere else — and being settled here has been a wonderful change. Over the years the house has continued to surprise and delight us. It nurtures everyday life and we’ve developed steady rhythms that make the space comfortable and familiar. Life isn’t perfect, of course, but with each season the house grows more lived-in and more like us.

This time of year the natural beauty around our home is especially present. On sunny weekends boats dot the water and the breeze through our open windows carries the scent of lilacs and salt air. There are many features of this house that I probably missed on the listing photos, or that I didn’t realize would affect our daily life so positively. Every home has its own charms, and as you care for and learn to live in a place, it often becomes even more lovely and suited to your life.

The longer we stay, the more the house reflects our style. Each season clarifies my vision for the rooms and for how the house wants to feel. Lately I’ve leaned into a relaxed “summer cottage by the sea” look — light, coastal touches and effortless comfort. It just feels right for this house and for this moment.

I mentioned in a recent Life Lately post that we added a new rug to the living room, and I wanted to share more about it here.

The rug we chose adds pattern and color while staying versatile.

We chose an indoor/outdoor rug for its durability and easy care. It wears like a favorite pair of jeans: comfortable, reliable and flattering with many different styles. The soft blue tone reads as a neutral in the room while still introducing a cheerful, grounded layer of color.

Underneath the rug we added a plush rug pad to make the floor feel cozier and to keep the rug from slipping. That extra layer makes a big difference in comfort and stability.
