Do you ever feel like your home can spiral into chaos faster than you can recover? You look away for a moment and everything seems to unravel. You’re not alone.
Years ago we discovered a simple trick that reliably makes a home look tidier in just five minutes. It won’t produce perfection or photo-ready spaces, but it creates a noticeable difference quickly — enough to feel calmer and more in control. Sometimes that small change is exactly what you need.
When our children were little, we needed an easy, repeatable system to get the house in order fast. Chore charts and long cleaning sessions weren’t working for us. Instead, we wanted an approach that felt doable and gave the house a sense of basic order and cleanliness without being overwhelming.
Our solution came from one simple rule my husband introduced: nothing should be left on the floor that doesn’t belong there. Each evening he would call a “floor check” and everyone would spend five minutes picking things up off the floor.
Clean floors = cleaner house
I had no idea how much that small habit would change the overall feel of our home.
You might think clearing surfaces like tables makes the biggest difference, but if the floor is still scattered with clothes, toys, backpacks and paper, the room keeps feeling chaotic. A messy floor draws the eye and makes the entire space look and feel out of control, even if other surfaces are tidy.
One great side effect of this rule: once the floor is clear, tackling the rest of the room feels much less daunting.
For our family, the floor was the simplest, most manageable place to begin.
It didn’t matter if our kids stacked their things on a chair or desk temporarily. If that bothered us, we could spend a couple of extra minutes doing a focused “cleaning frenzy” to put those items away. Breaking the room into smaller zones, and prioritizing the floor, made the task feel achievable.
Even now, when clutter feels overwhelming, I start by picking things up off the floor. Having a clear starting point makes all the difference.
Do you keep your floor free of clutter?
