Over the past couple of years I’ve collected a few fishing baskets. After a recent post, several people asked about the basket in my kitchen, so I wanted to share a little about my small collection and how I use these pieces around the house.
You can find similar baskets in many online shops or at local secondhand stores and flea markets. If you have thrift stores nearby, check them often—these baskets show up when you least expect them.
My first one came from the back of a vintage shop. I didn’t even know they had a specific name then; the shape simply caught my eye. Their form is unique and gives them a lot of character.
Baskets are useful for both decor and organization, and these fishing-style baskets add an extra dose of charm. They feel both practical and decorative, which makes them easy to place throughout the home.

We have a larger fishing basket hanging in our mudroom. My husband started using it to store some of the dog supplements—such a clever use. I love that the long handle lets the basket hang on a hook; it looks so charming that way.

The basket I used to hold apples in my recent shelf-styling post moves around the house frequently. It’s great for hiding small items or elevating a display—fill it with useful things and it instantly looks intentional.

These baskets are also delightful with plants or fresh flowers. Using unexpected containers like this adds texture and a relaxed, collected feel to a room.

We hung one on our door with a white rope and filled it with plants for our fall porch display. You can line a basket with a plastic bag or place jars or glasses inside to hold water for flowers—simple solutions that protect the basket and keep it functional outdoors.

I love the texture, shape and versatility of these baskets. They serve practical purposes while bringing a bit of rustic charm to any space.

I’ve even used one as a tidy and attractive way to store extra toilet paper in our powder bath.
