Being a homebody can transform your life and positively influence those around you in simple, healthy ways.

As part of my Year of Dwelling Well, I’m starting a three-part mini-series on daily self-care rituals for the homebody. If you missed my previous series, How to Find Joy at Home, you can catch up on that for more ideas and encouragement.

I’m a homebody. I cherish the simple pleasures of being at home: puttering around, tending to little tasks, tidying, and making spaces feel inviting. These small acts bring me deep satisfaction.

Being a homebody isn’t only about getting cozy or redecorating. Mindfully caring for my home and my body equips me to serve others better.

For me, being a homebody is less about hiding away and more about becoming whole.

Quote from my book Dwelling

Some people hear “self-care” and think it sounds selfish. Paired with the idea of a homebody, it can seem self-serving: puttering around the home and taking care of yourself. That reaction is understandable. Self-care and home-care can feel uncomfortable or indulgent, especially if you’re used to putting others first or struggling to find time and energy for daily routines.

I’ve learned that caring for my home and body are among the most meaningful ways I can love my family and the broader world. Home is my sanctuary—an environment that fuels and prepares me for the life I want to live.

Over the years I’ve made significant shifts in how I tend to myself and my space, but each change began as a small step. Tiny adjustments might feel insignificant at first, yet they accumulate over time into better health, more joy, and deeper contentment. These gradual changes enable you to live fully—not someday in the future, but now.

Each small step builds confidence and momentum.

Caring for your home and body equips you to care for your family and allows you to contribute to your community in the unique ways only you can. You don’t need perfect circumstances to start—small, consistent habits matter more than waiting for the ideal moment.

You are capable and needed. Allow yourself the care you deserve.

If you don’t yet have a Dwelling Well Journal, consider using one as a gentle guide. A flexible wellness journal can support daily, monthly, and yearly habits that transform your life step by step. It’s a companion for reflection and motivation as you work through your Year of Dwelling Well.
