Industrial Coastal Home Office Design Board — A Rebel Take on Tradition

It’s time to share another of my design boards for the latest voting round in the $10,000 Your Picks. Your Place. sweepstakes. I had so much fun creating these boards — it’s inspiring to see a room come together on a screen without spending a dime or lifting a finger.

For this round I was asked to design a “traditional home office,” but I tend to resist being boxed in, so I bent the brief a bit and created a mixed-style board. I like melding influences, so this one became what I’m calling Industrial Traditional Coastal — traditional elements with coastal lighting and industrial accents. Why settle for plain when a room can feel layered and interesting?

fishermen pendant lights

I fell for these coastal fisherman pendant lights — they brought the right relaxed, maritime vibe that classic traditional fixtures couldn’t deliver.

Porch Grey Paint

For the wall color I chose Porch Grey, a soft green-grey that reads warm rather than cold and provides a subtle coastal backdrop for the furnishings and accessories.

Project Table Pottery Barn

I selected a taller work table from Pottery Barn instead of a traditional low desk. A project table lets you stand or perch while working, and it fits my workflow better — I rarely sit at a conventional desk for long stretches.

Tolix Stool

I added woven poufs for footrests, a Tolix stool for an industrial touch, and a comfortable chair to balance the look. Small accessories and layered textures make the space feel curated and livable. You can see the full design on the inspiration board below — all item sources are listed on the Your Picks. Your Place. board.

Do you create design boards to visualize a room before you start a project?

I find them incredibly helpful for planning scale, color, and layering textures.
