DIY Wall Art and Faux Wallpaper Ideas for Your Home

Easy and Inexpensive DIY Art and Wallpaper for the Home

I have enjoyed creating my own artwork from quality paper for years. When you want something pretty on your walls but don’t have the “right” piece, heavy-duty wrapping paper is an excellent option. Large sheets of sturdy wrapping paper—more like poster-size than scrapbook paper—work beautifully as temporary or permanent wallpaper and also frame nicely as standalone art.

After painting our bedroom, I discovered I didn’t have the perfect artwork for the wall beside the closet. To solve that, I chose a few favorite sheets of heavy wrapping paper that complemented our color scheme: a blue marbleized design and a peacock pattern were among my picks. Because the sheets are large, they make an immediate visual impact when framed or hung.

Looking for larger statement pieces, I bought two inexpensive gray frames and updated them with a touch of gold to coordinate with the room. It’s a quick, affordable way to elevate simple frames and make the paper feel intentional and custom.

Framed patterned paper becomes a bold and cohesive statement. Leftover sheets can be used elsewhere: line drawers, back shelves, cover books, or create smaller framed groupings. Heavy-duty paper is versatile and easy to work with.

My daughters used the same technique to create a map-themed art installation in their townhouse hallway, using heavy paper and a poster hanging kit. It’s a great solution for renters or anyone who wants a bold look without commitment.

Thank you for your feedback on my new bedroom paint color. I encourage trying bold choices that feel right for your home rather than sticking only to safe or trendy options. The deep, moody hue created a cozy, romantic space that we love, and it added a rich, layered feeling to our home.

I’m excited to share more updates as rooms come together. This week I’ll reveal the new dining room light fixture and a small change that transformed our living room fireplace—both simple updates with a big impact.
