Who has been puttering or fall nesting around their home? I started to, then had a few unexpected deadlines this week. And yesterday the sun was so warm and inviting I took a break to enjoy some time outside. A little vitamin D felt wonderful.
I’m back at it now and I’ll be sharing a few results of my puttering next week. For today, here are simple fall decorating ideas I’ve used at home over the years.

1. Decorate fillable lamps
Fillable glass lamps are a clever way to add seasonal interest. You can tuck in dried flowers, acorns, small pinecones or other little finds to change the look for fall.

2. Pair books and organic elements
Books are a versatile decor staple year-round and especially charming for autumn. Stack cookbooks or vintage books and pair them with pumpkins, artichokes or other natural items for a cozy vignette.

3. Fold a stack of cozy throw blankets
A neatly folded stack of soft throws on a shelf or bench invites warmth and comfort—perfect for the season.

4. Drape extra layers over your furniture
Drape a blanket or decorative fabric over the arm, back, or seat of a sofa to instantly change the look and add texture.

5. Use a ladder to display extra blankets
A ladder is both stylish and functional for showing off blankets and throws while keeping them accessible.

6. Gather autumn branches
Bring the outdoors in by collecting colorful fall branches, or use realistic faux branches when fresh ones aren’t available. They add height and natural color to arrangements.

7. Use wood accessories
Wood accents warm up any room—bowls, cutting boards, and small wooden decor pieces work especially well in kitchens and dining areas.

8. Display velvet pumpkins
Velvet pumpkins add a soft, elegant touch. Arrange them on a mantel, in a basket on the coffee table, on a stool, or grouped as a centerpiece.

9. Go crazy for textures
Layer textures with baskets, woven textiles, fringe and tassels. Mixing tactile elements is one of the simplest ways to make a space feel cozy and inviting.

10. Bring in lanterns and candles
Lanterns and candles set a warm, restful atmosphere. Battery-operated candles offer a safe, low-maintenance option and often include timers so they can turn on automatically.

11. Refresh your bookcases
Rotate in seasonal items on bookcases: cookbooks, a small lantern, bowls filled with pinecones or other nature finds create a quick fall refresh.

12. Add extra throw rugs and runners
Rugs and runners are an easy, impactful update. Place soft rugs near entryways and runners along halls or in the kitchen to add warmth underfoot.

Runners and rugs can transform a space quickly and are easy to swap seasonally.

13. Use creative containers and hooks for fall accessories
Organize scarves, tote bags, umbrellas and coats with attractive hooks or unique containers. It keeps entryways tidy while adding to the seasonal styling.

14. Add autumn wreaths to windows, doors and mirrors
Wreaths aren’t just for front doors. Try tacking one behind a mirror or hanging one in a window for an unexpected, layered look.

Find pieces that speak to you and mix them into your home to create a warm, welcoming fall mood.
Have you started decorating for fall? Small changes—textures, natural elements, cozy textiles and soft lighting—make a big difference.
