Cozy Winter Sanctuary: Hygge Tips for Homebodies

As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, winter is approaching — it’s time to prepare your winter sanctuary.

Every year a familiar online debate resurfaces: those eager to decorate for Christmas versus those who want to remain fully present in autumn.

My view is simple: you don’t have to choose — you can do both.

Starting holiday or winter preparations a few weeks earlier than others doesn’t mean you’re rushing through fall. In fact, preparing ahead can help you be more present in both the current season and the one to come.

Putting off preparation or avoiding the shift between seasons often leads to disappointment or fatigue when the next season arrives.

There’s a balance between presence and preparation — what I call finding your seasonal home rhythm. Each household finds its own rhythm. It’s not about how much you do or when you do it; it’s about shaping an atmosphere that welcomes you, bringing peace and beauty into your daily life.

Hygge for HomeBodies

Not everyone loves winter. Many dread the long evenings, cold mornings, or the overwhelm that can accompany the holidays — and the letdown afterward.

We’re starting a new Winter Series in HomeBody Gathering Place now — before the holiday rush — so you can enter the season feeling inspired and ready to enjoy it.

You’re invited to join our new series, Hygge for HomeBodies, inside the cozy corner of The Inspired Room known as HomeBody Gathering Place.

This winter we’ll lean into hygge — the Danish embrace of coziness and contentment — and practice the HomeBody approach of slow decorating, meaningful rhythms, and creating sanctuary in every season.

Hygge is less about ornamentation and more about feeling: the quiet contentment that comes from simple pleasures — a warm mug, candlelight on a dark evening, or time with people you love.

I also love the word hyggelig, which describes something pleasant or cozy. A hyggelig moment might be curling up under a blanket, reading by a fire, or sharing a meal with close friends and family.

That’s the feeling we’re creating this winter: a home that feels hyggelig, comfortable, and inviting all season long.
