One of the most important elements in any room is lighting. Beyond its obvious practical role, lighting brings personality, sets mood, and can become the focal point of a space. I love unique interior lighting, but I also try to keep it affordable—especially when updating an entire house. While there are beautiful high-end fixtures I adore, I often look for budget-friendly alternatives that still make a strong design statement.

I’m so glad many of you liked the two lights we installed in our kids’ bathroom. I’m really happy with how they turned out. I found those bathroom lights at Lowe’s for under $30 each—an affordable choice that still looks great.
People often ask where I find the new lights I’ve been adding around the house. A surprising number of the fixtures I’ve used are actually outdoor lights. Outdoor lighting tends to have more interesting shapes and finishes, so I often browse the outdoor lighting sections first when looking for something distinctive to use indoors.

This dining room lantern came from Pottery Barn’s outdoor lighting collection. It isn’t currently available, but similar styles do appear from time to time. It wasn’t cheap, but I used a gift card and it became a worthwhile splurge. Some fixtures are worth spending a bit more on because they serve as a strong focal point in a room.

Another way to get a unique look is to choose a fixture with a shape you love and personalize it with paint. A friend’s client brightened up a Bellacor lantern by painting it green—an approach I adore. Painting a light is a simple, cost-effective way to add personality without buying something custom.
The lights above our stairs are outdoor lanterns as well. I was impressed with their quality and scale; they look beautiful in person. I found them on a significant sale over a holiday weekend at an online lighting retailer, which made them an excellent value.

In addition to buying new fixtures, I often visit ReStores, thrift shops, and antique stores to find interesting lights that can be rewired. I prefer to have a professional handle the electrical work, even though rewiring a fixture isn’t always difficult. It’s worth paying a licensed electrician for safety and a clean installation.
I’m thrilled that mainstream retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot now offer affordable, stylish lighting. You can find a wide variety of looks—from industrial-style pendants to cage shades and vintage-inspired pendants—at price points that make it practical to update multiple rooms.
I picked up a small lantern at Lowe’s for a subtle light above a painting. It adds character without competing with the artwork, and being able to buy it locally meant I could install it right away.

Home improvement stores are expanding their lighting selections with styles that are both on trend and wallet-friendly. Whether you prefer a modern industrial pendant, a classic bell shade, or a painted lantern, there are many options available without the designer price tag.

The top light featured in the original post is also from Home Depot.
