Sometimes I think I enjoy gardening even more than decorating. I love puttering around our yard, planning new plantings and small improvements that make the outdoor space feel like home.
We truly live inside the city of Seattle, but our neighborhood feels peaceful and a little removed from downtown. Quiet streets, minimal traffic, and views of water and mountains make our corner of the city feel calm and restorative. We’ve been fortunate to create plenty of room for gardening and outdoor living.
Since moving in we’ve added a beautiful deck, installed steps to a new side patio where we sip morning coffee to birdsong, and planted a fragrant bed we call “Lily’s garden.” We also have numerous container gardens, and even a neighbor’s fountain that adds a gentle water soundtrack to our afternoons.
Over time we’ve continued to shape the yard. Now I find myself dreaming about the next projects: pea gravel paths around raised vegetable beds, flowering borders around our painted white shed, and other ideas to add texture and charm. There are always new plans to try and things to tweak.
We’ve decided to stay put for the foreseeable future and keep putting down roots here. That means there will always be more outdoor projects to tackle — which is exactly the kind of ongoing, satisfying work I enjoy.
One thing I miss from our old house is a real fire pit. We still have a “fire fountain” on the deck, but I would love a separate gathering spot out in the center of the backyard beyond the Trex deck: a circular area with Adirondack chairs and a proper fire pit where family and friends can gather.
Even though our kids may have moved out by this fall, I like to imagine luring them back for an evening of roasting marshmallows and making s’mores around a warm, crackling fire.
Here are some inspiration photos I’ve collected of charming backyard fire pit ideas!
