Step Out of Your Comfort Zone: Practical Ways to Be More Hospitable

Please welcome my friend Sandy from Reluctant Entertainer as my guest today!

I’ve been thinking a lot about comfort lately. I’m not a fan of winter, and the cold seems harder to tolerate each year. My hot tub has become a small haven—warming me, easing the stiffness that comes with early morning runs, and offering a simple, undemanding form of relaxation.

When I consider entertaining, the idea of comfort comes to mind immediately. Comfort is effortless and reassuring; it soothes, consoles, and makes people feel at ease. That feeling is central to hospitality.

I want entertaining to feel easy. I picture the perfect meal, delightful company, a beautifully set table, soft lighting, engaging conversation, and guests who leave feeling refreshed. That vision is appealing and, at times, intimidating.

Often, entertaining stretches me beyond my comfort zone. Things don’t always go as planned. Unexpected glitches happen, and those moments require patience and the ability to move through the situation gracefully. Learning to adapt is part of the process.

Leaving your comfort zone looks different for everyone. For some people, it means finding the courage to invite others into their home. For others, it involves trying new recipes or improving cooking skills. For many, the biggest barrier is allowing guests into a house that isn’t pristine or styled like a magazine.

I believe that sometimes we’re called to be stretched. Hospitality doesn’t have a single right form—it varies with each person. What feels natural to one host might be uncomfortable for another, and that’s okay.

It’s not always easy to step outside familiar routines, but that stretching can lead to growth. I’m working on becoming more courageous and flexible, knowing that each small risk helps me expand what I’m comfortable with.

Do you find it difficult to leave your comfort zone?

What stops you from wanting to entertain at home?
