Refurbished French Iron Garden Chair for Home or Office Makeover

I had been searching for an interesting, nontraditional desk chair for some time without much luck. Then, during a weekend visit to a local antique mall with family, we discovered a small iron chair that stopped us in our tracks. It was charming, unexpected and completely different from anything I’d seen.

We turned it every which way, admiring the details. It wasn’t an ordinary, run-of-the-mill chair. It felt part garden, part industrial metal, with an antique character and a lot of personality. Naturally, it had to come home with me. I haggled a bit and walked away happy when it became mine.

I don’t know the chair’s exact history. The silhouette is striking, and the little swan- or goose-head details on the armrests caught my eye. After searching online, I couldn’t find an identical match; the closest examples were described as French garden chairs from the early 1900s. Whether this particular piece is a true antique or a later reproduction, the craftsmanship is evident. The iron is substantial and the chair feels solid and well made.

I plan to refresh it with a new seat cover and am considering adding antique brass casters to raise it slightly and make it easier to move across my rug. Small updates like that will help it fit perfectly into my workspace.

My home office is shaping up nicely, and I’m excited about how the new chair complements the pieces I already had. I like combining what I own—like dark bookcases—with new or special finds. The mix of styles makes the room feel personal and unique. I’ve been pairing the chair with tufted accent seating, patterned curtains and vintage prints to create a space that feels collected and lively.

There is something rewarding about bringing together unexpected elements to create a room that feels fresh, fun and truly one of a kind.

So what do you think? Could this be an antique French iron garden chair? I’d rather keep the mystery—imagining it once lived in a lovely garden in France (or England) adds to its charm. Either way, I’m thrilled with the find.
