Over the weekend we experienced a fierce wind and rain storm in the Seattle area. I don’t mind storms when I’m safe inside, but part of this one involved crossing Puget Sound on the ferry, and I’ll admit I felt a little uneasy.
The waves were crashing against the boat and splashing over the lower deck where cars were parked. The ferry pitched and rolled with the surf, and salt spray hit our car in the dark. All I could think about was getting home to our warm, safe nest.
When we finally arrived, it was pitch black both outside and in—the power was out. We hurried to light candles so we could find our way to cozy beds for the night. It felt so good to be home.
Lighting candles when dusk falls is a simple fall ritual I adore—especially on stormy evenings, but really any chilly night. The soft glow instantly makes a space feel more intimate and comforting.

Do you have a favorite fall candle? One of my go-tos is a sweet vanilla-cinnamon scent that fills the room without overwhelming it.
