I received a few messages this week asking how to decorate in January — that awkward in-between time after the holidays and before spring. Once the tree and ornaments come down, rooms can feel a bit empty or bare.

If your home feels chilly or sparse in January, consider rearranging a few areas to create a more settled, comfortable feeling. Spring will arrive eventually, but until then it’s worth making the most of the season and creating a cozy atmosphere you enjoy.

On Monday I’ll share some small January updates I’ve made at home. I don’t overhaul my decor each season; my changes are usually subtle. Still, even minor updates can make a room feel refreshed. After the holidays I often add a few new decorative touches to warm a space, or simply move things around to lift my spirits and make rooms feel inviting again.

I continue to layer cozy, organic textures in soft, neutral colors. I start adding these layers in the fall and keep building as winter goes on. The same goes for clothing — I’m always adding another sweater or warmer socks. No wonder my grandmother used to offer me a sweater when I was cold.

Neutrals and texture are my go-tos because they create a soft, comfortable backdrop in this house (every home is different, of course). Right now I don’t gravitate toward palettes that feel too dark and brooding or too light and airy. I don’t follow color trends unless they genuinely appeal to me.

That said, I understand why many people introduce more color in January when the outdoors feels drab. I tend to add a bit more color myself this month — deep greens, teals, or navy accents can give a neutral room more presence. Navy, in particular, works well year-round in my home but feels especially right in winter when paired with warm layers and natural neutrals.

Experiment with different arrangements and accents in your rooms and notice what feels most comforting to you. Small tweaks can make a big difference.

I think the collage above evokes the kind of mood I’d like in my home this January.
