Being a homebody can shift your life in meaningful, healthy ways and affect the people around you positively.

As part of my Year of Dwelling Well project, I’m beginning a three-part mini-series on daily self-care rituals tailored for the homebody. If you missed my earlier series, How to Find Joy at Home, you can revisit it to catch up.

I’m a homebody at heart. I find joy in the simple acts of being at home—puttering, tending to small tasks, tidying, and making spaces feel welcoming.

For me, being a homebody isn’t just about lounging or decorating. Mindfully caring for my home and my body equips me to better serve family and community.

Being a homebody is, in many ways, about becoming whole—creating a life that supports your wellbeing and the people you love.

Quote from my book Dwelling

Some people hear “self-care” and think it sounds indulgent or selfish. Combine that with the stereotypes about homebodies and it can feel self-serving. Yet tending to a home and to yourself isn’t indulgence—it’s preparation. It allows you to be healthier, calmer, and more available to others. Despite that, self-care and home-care can still feel challenging for many reasons: time constraints, guilt, or simply not knowing where to begin.

I’ve learned that caring for both my home and my body are among the most important ways I can love my family and contribute to the world. My home is a sanctuary that fuels and readies me for the life I want to lead.

Over the years I’ve made many adjustments in how I care for myself and my surroundings. Each improvement began with small steps. Tiny changes may seem insignificant day-to-day, but they compound over time into better health, steadier joy, and increased contentment. Those small steps allow you to live your life more fully, here and now—not only when everything feels perfect.

Each small step I’ve taken has left me feeling more capable and empowered.

Caring for your home and body equips you to care for your family and to impact your community in the ways only you can. You don’t have to wait for perfect circumstances; meaningful change can begin today, with manageable, consistent choices.

You are capable, strong, and needed. Allow yourself to be deserving of care.

If you haven’t tried the Dwelling Well Journal, it’s a flexible wellness tool designed to guide daily, monthly, and yearly habit changes. Use it to record small wins and to keep momentum as you work toward a more balanced life. The journal pairs well with the Year of Dwelling Well practice as a gentle accountability companion.
