It’s easy to get the impression from blogs and Pinterest that every home must be decorated in whites and light neutrals. But that’s not the only path, and it certainly shouldn’t be a rule. What looks great in a photo doesn’t always translate to what feels best in your own space. Personal taste, the home’s architecture, natural light and existing furnishings all influence which colors will truly sing in a room.

I enjoy a wide range of styles and hues, so I appreciate many approaches to decorating. When a room is thoughtfully composed and visually pleasing, I tend to like it regardless of the specific colors used. That said, warm oranges and reds always pull at me during the cooler months, and I often look for subtle ways to introduce them as accents while keeping a balanced foundation.
Right now I’ve been using blue and warm gray as my base colors, but I still love incorporating touches of orange and red. Accent pieces, textiles and layered textures let those seasonal tones shine without overwhelming the space. Surrounding yourself with colors you love can highlight the best features of your home and create an inviting atmosphere.

Still, there’s something about reds and oranges that instantly evokes a snug, autumnal feeling—perfect for creating a welcoming room during the cooler months.
