Last week I went on a major early-summer organizing spree. It always feels good to declutter and refresh your home.
As I moved through rooms tidying and sorting, I thought about the many ways I contain and organize essentials to make the most of our space.
Over the years I’ve developed several reliable systems. I especially love solutions that make the house look more cohesive and intentional. Below are some of my favorite organizing strategies that might inspire you as you tackle your own home.
1. Tiered Stands

When counter space is limited, tiered stands and vertical shelving are great for multiplying usable surface area. A small tiered stand I bought years ago has been one of my best purchases: I use it for supplements, decorative displays, and accessories for the coffee station. It’s a compact, versatile way to keep items accessible without taking up a lot of horizontal space.

I’m also a big fan of shallow lidded baskets. A low, lidded basket can fit at the end of a bed, in an entry, on a bathroom shelf, or in a living room. It’s an attractive and practical spot for stashing blankets, magazines, or small extras so things don’t end up scattered around.
2. Over Door Organizers

Clear shoe-pocket organizers are unexpectedly useful for more than shoes. In a laundry closet they hold cleaning supplies, small tools, and miscellaneous items while keeping them visible and off cabinet shelves. They make use of otherwise wasted space on the back of doors.

I like having pretty but practical items on display. A kitchen crock for wooden spoons keeps utensils within easy reach without rummaging through drawers. For a streamlined look, limit the contents to wood spoons or wood and white utensils for a cohesive feel.
3. Secretary Desk

An antique secretary or similar free-standing cabinet can solve storage problems in rooms that lack built-ins. We use ours as a mailing and stationery station. The key is to assign a single purpose to the piece—mailing supplies, glassware, or a dish cabinet—so it doesn’t become a catchall for clutter.
4. Command Strips and Hooks
Small self-adhesive strips and hooks are inexpensive and effective. They create order throughout the house, especially inside cabinet doors, where they keep small items visible and easy to access without taking up shelf space.
5. Under Sink Organizers

Under-sink spaces can be transformed with risers, trays, and baskets. These simple tools help separate products, prevent spills, and make it easy to see what you have. Small containers and tiered risers maximize the storage and reduce the time spent digging for what you need.
If you want more ideas for drawers and cabinets, it’s helpful to look inside different spaces and adapt ideas that suit your home’s layout and needs.

6. Stair Basket

I laughed when I saw a post that said, “Nobody is more full of false hope than a mom who places items on the stairs for family members to carry up.” That’s so relatable. A stair basket gives those stray items a temporary home until someone carries them upstairs—helpful and forgiving.
7. Lidded Ottomans

Lidded ottomans are ideal for hiding everyday items—magazines, remotes, children’s toys, or shoes—so the room looks neater without sacrificing convenience. They combine seating and storage in one attractive piece.

A command center—whether a framed chalkboard, magnetic board, or a free-standing cabinet—helps keep family life organized. Mine is great for tracking projects, reminders, and everyday tasks. A simple framed chalkboard or magnetic board can be a focal point for schedules and notes.
A DIY free-standing command center can be especially useful in an entryway to corral papers, keys, and outgoing mail so everything has a place.
8. Cabinet Shelf Risers

Shelf risers let you see and reach pantry items more easily by creating additional layers. They’re a simple way to maximize cabinet depth and keep similar items grouped together for quick retrieval.
Organizing on a budget often comes down to using a few well-placed accessories—runners, risers, and baskets—that make a big visual and practical difference.
9. Pegboard

A pegboard wall is an adaptable organizer for tools, craft supplies, or household items. With hooks, baskets, and shelves, a pegboard keeps frequently used items visible and easy to grab while freeing up drawer and cabinet space.
10. Under Bed Organizers
If you have a small bedroom, use the space under the bed to store extra blankets, pillows, seasonal clothing, or shoes. Low-profile bins and vacuum-seal bags keep items protected and accessible without cluttering closets.
