Kitchens offer endless opportunities to express personal taste — from color and pattern to lighting and architectural features. Over the course of this kitchen series, I’ve enjoyed collecting ideas that make a big impact, regardless of budget or square footage.
Today in our Best of the Best series: eight elements that transform a kitchen.
House Beautiful
1. Patterns
Accent rugs, a unique backsplash, patterned or shaped tile, shades or curtains, and patterned fabrics
Pattern adds visual interest and warmth. A striped runner or graphic rug anchors the space and comforts bare feet, while a patterned backsplash or decorative tile becomes an instant focal point. Window treatments and upholstery provide additional opportunities to layer pattern without overwhelming the room.

2. Statement Lighting
Oversized (appropriately scaled) pendants, stylish sconces, chandeliers, lanterns, lamps, and under-cabinet lighting
Lighting shapes the mood and highlights design details. Choose a dramatic pendant or chandelier over an island, add layered task lighting under cabinets, and balance the room with wall sconces or table lamps to create a welcoming, well-lit kitchen.
3. Metal Accents
Hardware, faucets, metal barstools, lighting, displayed pots and pans, and vintage metal accessories
Metal finishes bring polish and cohesion. Matching or complementary metals on cabinet pulls, faucets, and light fixtures unify the palette, while brass, black, or nickel accents add character. Openly displayed cookware or a vintage metal fan offers an authentic, lived-in feel.

Floors, counters, cutting boards, light fixtures with wood details, woven baskets, trim pieces, and shelving
Wood introduces warmth and texture that make a kitchen feel inviting. Solid wood or warm-toned engineered floors, butcher-block counters, open wood shelving, and woven baskets soften hard surfaces and add natural beauty to the space.

Wall niches, decorative tile, glass cabinet doors, special hardware, and crown molding
Custom touches elevate ordinary cabinetry and surfaces. A built-in niche or decorative tile inset creates a bespoke moment, while glass-front cabinets showcase curated dishes. Thoughtful hardware and trim finish the look with tailored refinement.

6. Comfort Layers
Barstools and chairs, a dining table, Roman shades, rugs, accent lighting, and freestanding cabinets
Comfortable seating and soft layers invite people to linger. Padded stools, a cozy rug, and layered lighting around a dining nook make the kitchen feel like the home’s social center. Freestanding pieces add function and flexibility where built-ins won’t fit.

Framed art, a chalkboard, pitchers and vases, trays and baskets, clocks, and open shelves for books or curated dishes
Accessories make a kitchen feel lived-in and personal. Select a few well-placed items — art, ceramics, a chalkboard menu, and baskets — to create a collected, functional display that reflects your style without cluttering surfaces.

8. Architectural Detail
Arched doors, wood beams, wall or ceiling paneling, trim work, and special countertops or covered hoods
Architectural elements give a kitchen a sense of permanence and character. An arched doorway, exposed beams, beadboard, or a custom range hood creates memorable drama and anchors style choices throughout the room.
